NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana–This summer, seven members of Bethlehem traveled to New Orleans to join thousands of Lutheran youth at the six day Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod National Youth Gathering 2016. The group was made up of four members of Bethlehem’s youth group and three adult chaperones. When they left the airport in Chicago, none of them had much of an idea of what to expect, but in the end, everyone had an awesome time. Upon arrival, they were met by a daunting pile of 25,000 identical backpacks to sort through. Each day started with morning Bible study. One day it followed an early 5K race, and each day there were many Superdome from Garagesessions by inspirational presenters at various learning and interest centers. Every day there was also a mass event and worship at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, where thousands of young people sang, danced, clapped and worshiped together. It was very inspiring to behold–so many of our nation’s youth coming together and praising the Lord.

The youth had occasional free time to go out into the city to do a little sight-seeing and take in local events. The New Orleans food Homemade Jambalayawas outstanding of course and some enjoyed local and original Louisiana dishes and favorites for the first time like jambalaya. Everyone had a wonderful time and they highly recommend others attend future annual youth gatherings if they can. The 2019 gathering is slated for Minneapolis and all the youth at Bethlehem are encouraged to look into being part of next year’s event. For information about the Bethlehem youth group, please contact the Bethlehem office at 847-426-7311 or bethchurchdun@aol.com.
